L didn't pause in his approach, ultimately aiming and landing on the perch nearest Light, which happened to be the spot next to him on the couch. It was close enough for L to easily be able to hand one of the plates over to Light or to set the pair of plates and the two forks on the coffee table if he wanted. For the moment, however, L simply chose to hold onto the cake and forks. He wanted to try his hand at convincing Light to partake of the meal Misa had prepared for one of them.

"You're right, of course, but I thought I would bring you a piece of cake anyway. It is your cake, after all, there's nothing wrong in indulging every once in a while. Think of me doing this for you as a token of friendship, or if you'd rather not, perhaps you could think of it this way: if you eat this piece of cake, that's one less piece I can eat. You'd be robbing me of the experience of eating that piece. And, on top of that, if Misa learns you ate the cake she made, she'll be more likely to be agreeable when it comes to other matters."

While L didn't think this approach had a high probability of succeeding - naturally, Light would be suspicious of L's motives - he figured it would be worth a shot. If it came down to it, L didn't consider himself above trying to force feed Light, though that would only be as a last resort. Enough of one that L would be just as likely to consider doing a simple taste test himself. Force feeding Light cake would be amusing, but it would likely result in Light denying L sugar until he was forced to do something to make up for it or atone.
